Prominent researchers gather to share findings and look for global solutions to issues such as mad cow and chronic wasting disease

PrPCanada 2007 – Canada’s Prion Research Conference: Exploring New Terrain”
 
Prions are a class of protein found in the brains of mammals that when misfolded are believed to cause various infectious diseases of the nervous system like bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) in cattle and chronic wasting disease in elk and deer.

Calgary Canada ’s top prion researchers will be joined by international experts to look at advances in prion research in Alberta and Canada, discuss the global impacts of prion research, and look for solutions that can be applied beyond Canada’s borders. World-renowned scientists will be on hand to discuss key topics such as the status of prion research around the world, risk management practices in the United Kingdom, and the impact of prion diseases on people.
 
Several experts will be available to the media for the duration of the conference: 
 
Ms. Florence Kranitz , President of the Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease Foundation who works tirelessly on behalf of patients and families 
  
Mr. Ray Bradley , renowned prion researcher and BSE consultant who was Head of Pathology when BSE was discovered in the United Kingdom in 1986 
  
Dr. Robert Will, a clinical neurologist form the University of Edinburgh, who was at the forefront of discovering variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease is transmissible through blood transfusion 
  
Dr. Neil Cashman, Scientific Director of PrioNet Canada and renown expert on prion diseases as well as Alzheimer’s, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and post-polio syndrome 
  
Mr. Jay Ingram, Host of Discovery Channel’s Dailey Plant show and presenter of the “Mad Cow Mysteries” public lecture series who is one of Canada’s best-known science communicators
