Research Approach
The purpose of PrioNet's ongoing research is to enhance human and animal health; train and retain excellent fundamental and applied scientists; and, derive socioeconomic benefits for all Canadians.
Through the establishment of a national research network, PrioNet focuses on Canadian prion disease problems posed by bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, commonly known as mad cow disease), chronic wasting disease (CWD), and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). PrioNet's current research collaborations are illustrated below.
PrioNet capitalizes on Canadian strengths in fundamental, applied, and social research in prion and allied sciences to:
- Identify cattle genes that participate in BSE susceptibility;
- Develop novel methods for detection and cost effective elimination of environmental prion contamination, especially from BSE;
- Determine strategies to eradicate CWD;
- Develop treatments for CJD;
- Explain the mechanisms of prion protein misfolding;
- Develop novel models of experimental prion infection to complement global research on prion disease pathogenesis and bioassay; and,
- Develop a strategy for risk management and communication related to prion disease risks across Canada.
