Prion Risk 2008
Risk Assessment and Management Satellite Event in association with Prion 2008
Presented by PrioNet and the NeuroPrion Risk and Control Group
Tuesday, October 7, 2008 13:30 - 19:00 Hotel Auditorium Avenida de Aragón, 400, 28022 Madrid, Spain

Imported and domestic BSE has been detected in 27 countries around the world. Areas affected include Asia, Europe, North America, and the Middle East. Many non-affected countries have also implemented risk control measures for BSE. Canada has experienced the most costly economic outbreak on a per case basis compared to all other countries. In Canada and in other countries, past attempts to manage BSE have been limited by risk management decision-making approaches that have not fully accounted for all of the human health, animal health, economic, social, psychological, and secondary risk issues involved with BSE. The challenges posed by BSE and vCJD, along with the efforts made by national governments and international organizations to respond to these challenges has demonstrated the need to strengthen risk management practices for these important prion diseases. Building on the work of PrioNet Canada in managing prion disease risks, the goal of this half day satellite session is to discuss how current risk management practices for BSE and TSEs can be strengthened. The target audience includes academics, research scientists, international scientific experts, policy makers, industry leaders and public interest stakeholders. Register today! Visitor Information The city is located on the river Manzanares in the center of the country, between the autonomous communities of Castile and León and Castile-La Mancha. Due to its economic output, standard of living, and market size, Madrid is considered the major financial center of the Iberian Peninsula; it hosts the head offices of the vast majority of the major Spanish companies, as well as the headquarters of three of the world's 100 largest companies.
Madrid is a city of great cultural and political importance. While Madrid possesses a modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods and streets. Its landmarks include the huge Royal Palace of Madrid; the Teatro Real (Royal theatre) with its restored 1850 Opera House; the Buen Retiro park, founded in 1631; the imposing 19th-century National Library building (founded in 1712) containing some of Spain's historical archives; an archaeological museum of international reputation; and three superb art museums: Prado Museum, the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, housed in the renovated Villahermosa Palace.
October is autumn in Madrid and although the weather can be pleasant in this month, delegates should be prepared for rainfall. The average temperature is 16oC.
