MITACS Skills Training & Entrepreneurship Program (Step)
PrioNet Travel Support Application Deadline: April 26, 2010
MITACS Registration deadlines: Consult MITACS Step
Overview An ability to communicate concisely with others, to work effectively within a team, and to manage multiple timelines and projects - ‘soft skills’ as they are often referred – are starting to be viewed as important as more traditional approaches to education and technical training. Lack of emphasis on these skills has led to a ‘soft skills’ deficit in the Canadian workforce. MITACS Step was developed in response to this deficit, a skills gap recognized by various organizations, including NSERC, SSHRC, CIHR and the Canadian Association of Graduate Studies.
Additional Information MITACS is making the following workshops available to SYPA and PrioNet Members FREE of charge. They present a valuable opportunity to develop career skills for Highly Qualified Personnel.
Travel support is available from PrioNet to attend these workshops. The earlier you submit your application the sooner you will be able to know whether it has been approved. Proposals for travel support to attend MITACS Step workshops will be reviewed by the PrioNet Canada Administrative Centre and the PrioNet Education Committee. These workshops help prepare HQP for the transition into further graduate studies or positions within universities, government agencies and/or industry.

Appeal Mechanism The Executive Director of the Network will review appeal requests and report to the Board of Directors. Appeals will only be considered on the basis of procedural errors. The Executive Director shall prepare a report on whether (and how) the appeal in question has unveiled procedural errors with the selection process. The Board will receive the Executive Director's report and decide whether to dismiss or to forward the appeal for further evaluation by an adhoc committee. The decision of the Board of Directors will be final. Should the Board of Directors favor further evaluation, the appeal mechanism is restricted to the selection process itself and excludes the Scientific Advisory Committee recommendations. The ad-hoc committee will review the issue and submit a report with recommendations to the Board for consideration. The Board will review the report and render a final decision on the appeal. The Board’s decision will be communicated to the parties involved and to the NCE Directorate.
