4. The Investigation of Candidate Genes Associated with BSE Incidence
Principal Investigator: Stephen Moore, University of Alberta
Collaborators: David Coltman, University of Alberta John Williams, Parco Technologico Padano, Italy
This project will examine sequence variation in candidate genes that have been identified as well potentially identify novel candidate genes and tested for associations with disease status. The identification of genes involved in the overall progression of diseases will not only aid in better understanding prion diseases but may also serve to identify biomarkers and thus provide a means of testing for disease. Further, by identifying such genes additional opportunities for disease intervention and/or therapy may be revealed. The species of focus will be bovine, however where Elk genes have been characterised, genetic variation in that species will also be examined. Thus the opportunities for eventual biomarkers identification may be realized for the current CWD epidemic.
