2. Developing an Integrated Model of Risk Estimation of BSE and vCJD in Canada
Principal Investigator: Daniel Krewski, University of Ottawa
Co-Investigators: Susie ElSaadany, University of Ottawa Robert Smith, University of Ottawa
Collaborators: Noel Murray, Canadian Food Inspection Agency
Project Description: Since 2003, 11 cases of BSE have been confirmed in Canada, with the causative link between BSE and the variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans raising concerns of possible transmission of disease to the Canadian population. The goal of this project is to develop an applicable, integrated risk model that quantitatively estimates the spread of BSE in Canadian cattle, the extent of human exposure to contaminated meat, and the subsequent risk of vCJD to Canadians. The team will also examine the probability of secondary (human-to-human) vCJD transmission through blood transfusions and surgery.
