Project Description:
During a food safety occurrence such as an outbreak of BSE in cattle or CWD in wild cervids, public perceptions of health risk, and therefore consumer confidence, are directly impacted. However, the testing and traceability protocols established for prion diseases in Canada may not be aligned with consumer preferences or public health risk perceptions. This project aims to assess the political economy of existing prion disease testing and traceability systems in Canada, weighing their costs and benefits for live animal producers and processors down to consumers and taxpayers. It is intended that examining consumer response to testing and traceability for different animal products will contribute to efficient targeted policies across sectors currently affected by BSE, while enhancing the integrated risk management framework for any similar disease outbreak in the future.
